Local Information

  • Traveling by air, you will arrive at the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (airport code HEL). HEL is some 20 km from the city centre.
  • There is a direct local train connection from the airport to the Helsinki main train station ("Helsingin päärautatieasema"), located in the heart of the city. Take either the P-train or the I-train. For more, see here.
  • The conference venue are the near-by hotels are within easy walking distance (some 5 min) from the train station.
  • You will need to purchace an "ABC" regional public transport ticket for the train trip. Ticket machines are available at the airport's train station, or by using the HSL mobile app.

  • Alternatively, you can of course take a taxi from the airport. The trip takes some 25-30 min and expectedly costs around 40-50 EUR.

    Miscellaneous Good to know

    • Finland is part of the EURO zone.
    • Credit and debit cards are generally accepted in shops, cafes, pubs, restaurants, taxis, etc, as a primary payment method.
    • Electricity: 230 V, C and F plugs, similar to those used in Germany. The flat Europlug always fits.
    • Local time is GMT+3.
    • All prices include VAT. Tipping is not expected.
    • 1 and 2 cent coins are not in use in Finland. When paying with cash prices are rounded to the closest 5 cents.
    • Weather:
    • Emergencies: Call 112.
    • Pharmacy: "Apteekki" in Finnish. Kluuvin apteekki (Yliopistonkatu 5) is near the conference venue. Yliopiston Apteekki (Mannerheimintie 5) is open from 7am to midnight.
    • Tap water in Helsinki is of excellent quality. There is no need to avoid drinking tap water by buying bottled water.
    • Telephones: Do not expect to find a public phone; use your own mobile phone and buy a prepaid SIM card if needed. The country calling code for Finland is +358; if a local telephone number is 040123456, dial +35840123456.
